从前有一位贫穷的王子，他拥有一个王国。

他的王国非常小，但仍然足够大到可以用来成婚；而且他也想结婚。

他对皇帝的女儿说：“你愿意嫁给我吗？”这确实显得他有点太冒失了。
ItwascertalyratherolofhitosaytotheEperor’sdaughter,“willyouhave?”
但他就是这么做了；因为他的名字远近闻名；而且有一百只公主会回答：“愿意！”并且“衷心感谢您。”

碰巧在王子的父亲下葬的地方，长着一棵玫瑰树——一棵极其美丽的玫瑰树，它每五年才开一次花，而且即便开花也只开一朵，但那可是一朵玫瑰啊！它的香气如此芬芳，以至于闻到它香味的人都会忘却所有的烦恼和忧愁。

而且，王子还有一只夜莺，它唱歌的方式美妙极了，仿佛所有甜美的旋律都藏在它小小的喉咙里。

所以公主将会得到这朵玫瑰和这只夜莺；于是它们就被放进了大银盒子里，送去给她了。

皇帝让人把它们带进一个大厅，公主正在那里和宫廷里的贵妇们玩“串门”的游戏；当她看到装着礼物的盒子时，高兴得拍起手来。
theEperorhadthebroughttehall,wheretheprcessygat“Visitg,”withthediesoftheurt;andwhenshesawthecasterswiththepresents,shecppedherhandsforjoy.
“啊，要是只是一只小猫咪就好了！”她说；但那棵带着美丽玫瑰的玫瑰树映入了眼帘。
“Ah,ifitwerebutalittlepsy-cat!”saidshe;buttherosetree,withitsbeautifulrosecatoview.
“哦，做得多漂亮啊！”所有的宫廷贵妇们都说。
“oh,howprettilyitisade!”saidalltheurtdies.
“它可不只是漂亮，”皇帝说，“它太迷人了！”
“Itisorethay,”saidtheEperor,“itischarg!”
但是公主摸了摸它，差点就哭出来了。

“Fie,papa!”saidshe.
“这根本不是人造的，它是天然的！”

“在我们发脾气之前，先看看另一个盒子里装的是什么吧。”皇帝说。
“Letseewhatisihercasket,beforewegettoabadhuor,”saidtheEperor.
于是夜莺飞了出来，唱得如此动听，一开始没人能说出任何难听的话来。

“太棒了！太迷人了！”贵妇人们叫道；因为她们都习惯说法语，而且一个比一个说得差。
“Superbe!charant!”excidthedies;fortheyalledtochatterFrench,eaeworsethanherneighbor.
“这只鸟让我想起了我们已故皇后的那台八音盒。”一位老骑士说。
“howuchthebirdredsoftheicalboxthatbelooourblessedEpress,”saidanoldknight.
“哦，对呀！音调一样，演奏方式也一样。”
“ohyes!thesearethesatohesaexecution.”
“是的！是的！”皇帝说，他想起往事，像个孩子似的哭了起来。
“Yes!yes!”saidtheEperor,andheweptlikeachildattherebrance.
“我还是希望它不是一只真鸟。”公主说。
“Iwillstillhopethatitisnotarealbird,”saidtheprcess.
“是的，它是一只真鸟。”送鸟来的人说。
“Yes,itisarealbird,”saidthosewhohadbroughtit.
“那好吧，让这只鸟飞走吧。”公主说；而且她坚决拒绝见王子。
“wellthehebirdfly,”saidtheprcess;andshepositivelyrefedtoseetheprce.
然而，他并没有气馁；他把脸涂成棕黑色；把帽子拉下来遮住耳朵，然后去敲门。

“向皇帝陛下问安！”他说。
“Gooddaytoylord,theEperor!”saidhe.
“我能在皇宫里谋份差事吗？”

“哦，当然可以。”皇帝说。
“why,yes,”saidtheEperor.
“我需要有人来照看猪，因为我们有很多猪。”
“Iwantsoootakecareofthepigs,forwehaveagreatanyofthe.”
于是王子被任命为“皇宫养猪人”。

他在猪圈旁边有一间脏兮兮的小屋子；他整天都坐在那里干活。

到了晚上，他做好了一只漂亮的小炖锅。

锅的四周挂满了小铃铛；当锅煮开的时候，这些铃铛就会以极其悦耳的方式叮当作响，奏响那首古老的曲子：

“啊！亲爱的奥古斯丁，
一切都消逝，消逝，消逝！”

Allisgone,gone,gone!”
但更奇妙的是，无论谁把手指伸进炖锅冒出的烟里，立刻就能闻到城里每家炉灶上正在烹制的所有菜肴的味道——要知道，这可和那朵玫瑰大不一样。

这时公主恰好路过那里；当她听到这首曲子时，她停住脚步，似乎很高兴；因为她会弹《亲爱的奥古斯丁》；这是她唯一会弹的曲子；而且她只用一根手指弹奏。
Nowtheprcesshappeowalkthatway;andwhensheheardthetune,shestoodquitestill,andseedpleased;forsheuldpy“LieberAugte”;itwastheonlypiecesheknew;andshepyeditwithonefger.
“哎呀，这是我会弹的曲子。”公主说。
“whythereisypiece,”saidtheprcess.
“那个养猪人肯定受过良好的教育！进去问问他这乐器要多少钱。”
“thatseherdtcertalyhavebeenwelleducated!Goandaskhithepriceofthestrunt.”
于是一位宫廷贵妇只好跑进去；不过，她先穿上了木拖鞋。

“这只炖锅你要卖多少钱？”
这位贵妇问道。

saidthedy.
“我要公主的十个吻。”养猪人说。
“Iwillhavetenkissesfrotheprcess,”saidtheseherd.
“哼，真是的！”这位贵妇说。
“Yes,deed!”saidthedy.
“少一个吻都不卖。”养猪人又说道。
